This is to express my concern about a cult of gender identity that I consider to be misogynistic and contrary to science and logic. This cult claims that persons are in all cases of whatever sex they claim to be and demands that males who claim to be females have access to all-female spaces, including locker rooms, sports teams, and rape crisis centers. Because the cult is based purely on faith, not evidence or reason, it demands also that any dissent from its claims be silenced. We are seeing this in BMDC and it poses a threat to the existence of the group. The gender-identity cult is autocratic and anti-democratic.
---Its base of support is the Democratic Party and the profitable industry of what is falsely called "gender-affirming care." That industry and its political backers demand that gender dysphoria of young people be "treated" by diagnosing girls as male and boys as female, and by irreversibly altering their bodies by hormones and surgery.
Under the rules of this cult, the only possible definitions of maleness or femaleness are sex stereotypes, where boys are defined as kids who play with trucks and guns, and girls are defined as kids who play with dolls and wear dresses. Feminists decades ago showed how harmful sex stereotypes are and how they enforce the subordinate position of women. Both the "conservative" and "liberal" versions of class political rule celebrate sex stereotypes. The "conservatives" demand that kids change their behaviors if they violate the stereotypes. The "liberals" demand that kids change their bodies.
The entire US left is following the Democrats' lead on this gender-identity politics. The role of the cult within the left is to split and wreck any groups independent of the Democrats.
Our first task is to defend the democratic rights of women to speak out. A second, more difficult, task is to develop a feminist and inclusive strategy that challenges the gender-identity cult. That cult does not represent all trans people. Like many women, many trans people follow the cult because of intimidation.

No. There is no cult of gender identity.
I want to point out (or remind folks) that transgender people have always been with us. They are by and large the most loving humans on this planet. What we're dealing with is this:
Patriarchal Christian white supremacy grips America. Few of us may identify with that - being a man, Christian, or white - but still many millions are at least passively on board with this superiority mindset. European colonists brought over a binary way of thinking about gender. This has been a tool for control - through division or outright oppression. After hundreds of years, patriarchal Christian white supremacy now permeates the air we breathe. It informs our systems of governance. People of diverse backgrounds unknowingly perpetuate it every day.
I used to be confused about transgenderism. Like David, I thought people were still attached to stereotypes. They said "boys" are a certain way and "girls" are another.
When it comes down to it, people are who they say they are. KIDS are who they say they are. We give each other space to explore--to be our agendered, nonbinary selves, or land someplace more familiar to American ears.
Gender-affirming care happens all the time for cisgender people. Think breast augmentation. Hair plugs. Even puberty blockers. (Cisgender girls who would otherwise go through changes early and be teased by their peers might delay the process a bit so they can move along with their cohort.)
Transgender people have a MUCH harder time getting needed healthcare. Medical professionals work closely with the client over time. For kids, gender-affirming care might start with trying on different clothes or accessories to see how that feels. At some point, the person might adopt a new name. Surgery doesn't happen without considerable forethought.
We have no good reason to say things like "biological woman" to differentiate cisgender and transgender women. In fact, there is a good chance that no one here knows their "sex" chromosomes - which could easily be neither XX or XY.
The bathroom business, while feeding off legitimate fears due patriarchy, is simply a scapegoating tactic by politicians.
One bonus for them: Trans people are more likely to die through suicide or by other means. Another: Being given more power to take away free expression. The manufactured issue of bathroom safety effectively distracts people from their lack of governing ability or intentional abuse. And SPORTS? Jane provided a video recently from ALLIANCE DEFENDING FREEDOM. It's a Christian white supremacist group!

Yes that includes all women those who were assigned that gender at birth and those who have identified as women (trans women).
So where is the contradiction and confusion?
What is this gender identity cult issue you are bringing up at this time? This only serves to obfuscate important issues around trans rights and cause discussions which are not relevant to the work ahead.
Trans women have the same rights to the bathrooms, locker rooms and rape crisis centers as individuals who were assigned female gender at birth.
White men have been responsible for centuries of atrocities and injustice in the world. If one used a similar argument we should not allow white men in any public spaces. But we believe in organizing people across caste, class, race, gender identity and sexual orientation

see below an example of anti trans hate speech expressed by David in a discussion list created by John Harris so that David could push his views without our public working group list ever knowing about it! This is only one of many. This anti-trans rhetoric is antithetical to what it means to be a safe and inclusive space fighting for justice & equality.
Mike and I opposed to creating this discuss list without guidelines or rules,
This anti-trans rhetoric does not belong in BMDC or anywhere else claiming to be in solidarity with transgender and non binary people!

This is a response to David's email.
"Our first task is to defend the democratic rights of women to speak out".
Yes that includes all women those who were assigned that gender at birth and those who have identified as women (trans women).
So where is the contradiction and confusion?
What is this gender identity cult issue you are bringing up at this time? This only serves to obfuscate important issues around trans rights and cause discussions which are not relevant to the work ahead.
Trans women have the same rights to the bathrooms, locker rooms and rape crisis centers as individuals who were assigned female gender at birth.
White men have been responsible for centuries of atrocities and injustice in the world. If one used a similar argument we should not allow white men in any public spaces. But we believe in organizing people across caste, class, race, gender identity and sexual orientation

This is to express my concern about a cult of gender identity that I consider to be misogynistic and contrary to science and logic. This cult claims that persons are in all cases of whatever sex they claim to be and demands that males who claim to be females have access to all-female spaces, including locker rooms, sports teams, and rape crisis centers. Because the cult is based purely on faith, not evidence or reason, it demands also that any dissent from its claims be silenced. We are seeing this in BMDC and it poses a threat to the existence of the group. The gender-identity cult is autocratic and anti-democratic.
---Its base of support is the Democratic Party and the profitable industry of what is falsely called "gender-affirming care." That industry and its political backers demand that gender dysphoria of young people be "treated" by diagnosing girls as male and boys as female, and by irreversibly altering their bodies by hormones and surgery.
Under the rules of this cult, the only possible definitions of maleness or femaleness are sex stereotypes, where boys are defined as kids who play with trucks and guns, and girls are defined as kids who play with dolls and wear dresses. Feminists decades ago showed how harmful sex stereotypes are and how they enforce the subordinate position of women. Both the "conservative" and "liberal" versions of class political rule celebrate sex stereotypes. The "conservatives" demand that kids change their behaviors if they violate the stereotypes. The "liberals" demand that kids change their bodies.
The entire US left is following the Democrats' lead on this gender-identity politics. The role of the cult within the left is to split and wreck any groups independent of the Democrats.
Our first task is to defend the democratic rights of women to speak out. A second, more difficult, task is to develop a feminist and inclusive strategy that challenges the gender-identity cult. That cult does not represent all trans people. Like many women, many trans people follow the cult because of intimidation.
