Agreements for Multicultural Interactions
TRY IT ON:
Be willing to "try on" new ideas or ways of doing things that might not be what you prefer or are familiar with.
PRACTICE SELF FOCUS:
We attend to and speak about our own experiences and responses. Do not speak for a whole group or express
assumptions about the experiences of others. We do not assume the race, class, gender, sexuality, or ability of
anyone else. We have the individual option to share pronouns, and we will collectively respect pronouns.
ACKNOWLEDGE INTENT VS. IMPACT:
Understand and acknowledge impact of words and actions. Denying the impact of something by focusing on the intent
devalues the other person's experience of the initial interaction. No matter our intentions, we take responsibility for the
impact our actions have on others. Denying our impact by focusing on intent can be more destructive than the initial
interaction.
PRACTICE BOTH/AND:
We substitute "and" for "but" when speaking. This practice acknowledges and honors multiple understandings. This
also supports creating spaciousness around our binary ways.
REFRAIN FROM BLAMING & SHAMING SELF & OTHERS
We practice giving skillful feedback and not performing quality control on another's expressions, or our own,
understanding that powerful emotions can arise as a shout, a stammer, a cry; and that these expressions, too,
deserve space and care.
TAKING SPACE / MAKING SPACE:
We encourage full participation by all present, knowing that courage takes different forms for each of us. Take note of
who is speaking and who is not. If you tend to speak often, consider "tuning in" through mindful listening. If you tend to
rest in silence, consider "making space" by sharing your experience
PRACTICE MINDFUL LISTENING:
Try to avoid planning what you will say as you listen to others. Be willing to be surprised, to learn something new..
Listen with your whole self. We listen to understand, not to respond.
CONFIDENTIALITY:
Take home learnings but don't identify anyone other than yourself, now or later. If you want to follow up with anyone
regarding something they said in this session, ask first and respect their wishes.

Agenda proposals come from the Interim Committee. This proposal appears to be by two members, not by the Interim Committee. It also appears to pre-determine a verdict on a matter under discussion in BMDC.

BMDC:

Lita and Suseen are on the interim committee, Not me.

Yesterday, I noticed that the proposed agenda had not been sent. I sent a text to Suseen and Lita and Lita responded.

To assist Lita, I sent her the proposed agenda for the 6/04 meeting, when Tyler and I were Interim.

Lita made some changes and must have forgot to change the name from me to her, and then sent it out to the group.

This proposed agenda is from Lita, not from me.

Yes, this is under Mike's name but sent by Lita. Sussen and Lita are the interim committee. John told me the other day that Sussen doesn't go with Lita's expulsion plan. So Mike and Lita are bypassing a woman committee member and letting Mike speak for what he calls "our" agenda. It is a power grab.

In my understanding David is not in opposition to speaking about the transgender point, he is in opposition to the declaration "transphobic attacks on our list" and so am I. This is not democracy!  The way the agenda point is phrased is not a discussion at all, it's already predetermined on one viewpoint.  Anyone who cares about democracy should also oppose this.  Yes, we definitely need to discuss opposing views and how to proceed as a group but this should be a fair discussion not a guilty verdict prior to these discussions.  Let's be fair here.  Our group doesn't run like this, this is not how we handle conflict.  So again I don't oppose a point on the conflicts within BMDC including transgender rights, I am opposing the predetermined guilty verdict as written.  Thanks!

What we are dealing with here is very complex.  We are dealing with two groups of oppressed people being cis women and transgender women we are dealing with conflicting views of persons within our group, all who are good, caring people in my opinion.  We are not dealing with hateful people who are trying to harm others such as a racist attacking a black person.  So this example you have given does not apply.  I am advocating for fairness for ALL!

Thank you for clarifying that.  While it is important we discuss, respect and hear from transgender women & transgender rights, we should not silence or step on cis women in the process.  Cis women are also oppressed!  No matter what race, women in general have historically been and continue to be opposed that is very apparent with the attacks on women's rights and with the silencing of women's voices.  We need to respect and listen to ALL women, cis and transgender!  Declaring a cis woman's views, if they conflict with transgender women's views as transphobic, is using the word transphobic as a weapon to silence cis women!  Let's find away to come together please.
